What are SETS and REPS?

Set: A set is a series of repetitions (reps) of an exercise done in sequence.
Rep: Short for repetition, a rep is a single movement of any exercise.

You might do push-ups for 3 sets of 10 reps with 30 seconds rest between sets.

In Other Words…

  • 10 Push-Ups
  • 30 Seconds Rest
  • 10 Push-Ups

Also, you might see instructions such as 3×5 of bench press. In this example, 3×5 means “three sets of five reps of bench press.” Sets will always be stated first.

Unless otherwise noted, that also means you’ll use the same level of resistance for all 3 sets.  If you’re using a 10 lb. DB, for example, you’d use the 10 lb. DB for sets 1, 2 & 3.
